Beatified Enrique Suson

Heinrich Seuse O.P. or in its Spanish form Susón was a German mystic of the order of preachers born in 1295. He explored with psychological intensity the spiritual truths of Meister Eckhart's mystical philosophy. His devout works were extremely popular in the late Middle Ages. He had frequent visions and ecstasies, practised rigorous asceticism (which he prudently moderated in his mature years), and endured corporal pain with exceptional patience. He died in 1366 and was beatified in 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI.

This is a mural painting, executed by Lucas Valdés, at the beginning of the 18th century. Dressed in the Dominican habit, he holds in his right hand an awl, with which, through the opening at chest level, the anagram of the IHS and a Chrismon have been engraved. This gesture indicates his extreme love for God.

Although his beatification did not take place until the 19th century, his writings and his teaching made him one of the great models for members of the Order of Preachers to follow.
